Saturday 15 Aug - late rise, AFL, Rita cycling, au Canal, Thouars-sur-Garonne

The morning dawned dry but cool. After our late night at the Night Market, we gave ourselves the luxury of a sleep-in. In the late morning, I watched the AFL game between the Hawks and the Geelong Cats. For many years between 2009 and 2013, the Hawks could not beat the Cats, but that has all changed now. The Hawks got out to a 30 point lead in the first quarter, then held on to win by 36 points, 121-85

While I was watching the football, Rita went for a bike ride to the nearby hilltop towns of Mongaillard and Xaintrailles.

In the early afternoon, we left Vianne and headed down the Baise to Buzet, where we came up through the double-lock to re-join the Canal du Garonne, and then proceeded east to overnight again at Philippot Parc near au Canal.

Before dinner, we hopped on our bikes to ride to the nearby town of Thouars-sur-Garonne and then on to Buzet, then back along the canal to the barge. Thouars is a little town with lots of stone buildings, perched high above the River Garonne. It has to be high above the river because of the severe flooding that occurs on the Garonne. The water height gauge on the side of the building at the top of the launching ramp clearly shows the extent of the floods at this point.

After we got back to the barge, it was time for a leisurely dinner on the back deck, and then a few drinks as we waited for the sun to set in the west.
