Thursday 5 September - down to the Tarn pontoons, Barb&David, Tarn cruise

Cool but sunny morning; one can tell that Autumn is arriving. Took Kanumbra down to the pontoons on the Tarn, to wait for Barb and David to arrive (they are friends from Acheron, near Taggerty, and Barb was my French teacher back home). Turned into a beautiful sunny day, with a nice breeze on the river. The pontoons turned out to be a much nicer place to moor than I expected, with excellent views and a nice feeling of isolation.

Barb and David arrived around 3pm, and after a quick cool drink, we headed up the Tarn under the bridges to the old chateau near Ste Livrade.

Just before the turnaround point, we saw a fisherman on the left bank frantically waving. As we moved to the right bank, we saw that he was madly reeling in his line which still extended halfway across the river. After we turned around and came back past him, he took off in his dinghy from the left bank and took his line entirely across the river to the right bank – somehow I suspect this might be illegal, or just stupid. When we got back to the pontoons, Rita and Barb went for a swim (another of the advantages of mooring at the Tarn pontoons).

We then had dinner on the back deck while we watched the sun set slowly in the west, and the night lights on the bridge finally came on. Barb and David then made their way back to their B&B near our house.
