Mon 18 Sept - wild storm, Auxonne run, crosswind mooring, near Pipers, storm

We were awoken at 0200h by a wild electrical storm outside, followed by strong winds and heavy rain. It had mostly cleared by morning, but lingered around till mid-morning. When it finally cleared around 1100h, we made a run for Auxonne while the weather was clear. The trip was relatively uneventful apart from a tree down in the canal near ecluse 71. As often happens when we are in a hurry and can't stop, the mooring at Choissey was totally empty!

We reached Auxonne at 1700h, and because this was our last barging for the season, Capitaine Alain asked us to moor in our wintering spot on the north side of Pontoon A, in between two other Piper barges, Rangali and Manuka. This meant reversing our 3.8m wide barge into a space that was about 5m wide. This would normally not be a major problem, but today there was a strong crosswind from the south, which kept pushing the boat away from the mooring location. With the help of Alain, and the under the watchful gaze of the crew on the two Pipers, we evenutally got Kanumbra into place and tied up.

We settled ourselves into port, and had dinner on board. When a heavy rain storm started around 2030h, we decided it was time for a very early night.
