Mon 4 July - thunder, hill view, tag, swans, doofdoof, fete, Joes Pizza

A thunderstorm at 0300h woke us briefly, but we soon fell asleep again and didn't rise till 0900h. We pottered around on the boat and finally left Deluz around 1100h. The view of the hill we climbed yesterday looked very different from the river.

The first lock we went through today was at Laissey, which is where many boat owners have tagged the lock wall with their boat name and date of passage, as we did in 2019. So to continue the tradition, we added our 2022 date to our previous tags from 2019.

It was very quiet cruising along this section of the Doubs, and it was so surpising to see another boat in motion that I took a picture of it.

The Doubs has many groups of swans along its length, including this mum and baby. We also saw a large group of swans flying low along the river, but my phone was on charge at the time and I couldn't retrieve it in time to take the video before they had gone our of sight. It started to rain around 1330h and we decided to stop for lunch at the next lock. But when we got there, a couple of young fishermen were just setting up on the pontoon. However, as we pulled alongside, they said they would go fish at another spot for a while, so that we could enjoy our lunch. More French courtesy!

The next section of the Doubs was very picturesque and relaxing; so relaxing that I forgot to take any photos. But after a couple of hours, we were approaching Baume les Dames. This is a reasonable-sized town, but not one that has ever captured our imagination. When we got to the port, there were three empty boats moored outside the port restaurant (which was closed for the day), but we managed to find a mooring spot OK.  As the evening approached, we began to hear doof-doof music coming from the direction of town, so we went for a walk to identify the source, which we learned was a Fete (carnival) that was in town for the next week. While some of the attractions were self-evident, we had to think about what the "Sex & Dance" tent was offering.

We continued into town to look for somewhere to have dinner, but every place we found was closed (after all, it was a Monday in France). But we finally saw a group of ladies, who were dressed up and looking like they were going somewhere. So we followed them, and hoped that they weren't going to a friend's house for dinner! Eventually, they stopped at Joe's Pizza, the only place in town open on Monday night. They were doing a roaring trade, but we managed to grab a "table for two". The food and wine was good, and it was interesting to watch all the locals having a good night out. I don't often take pictures of food, but we were so glad to have found anywhere to eat that I made an exception this time.
