Sat 2 Sept - sleep, canoes, Sarah, walk, lock, circle singing, swim, disco, SGP Cardiff

Having moved from the noisy end of the mooring pontoon last night, we got a surprisingly good night's sleep, and woke to a cool but sunny morning. As we prepared breakfast, we noticed the canoes from the boating school heading downstream for a class.

During the morning, Rita went shopping and I cleaned the boat in preparation for Sarah and Alban visiting us today. When they arrived, we had lunch on board before heading off on a downstream river walk past the Capitainerie. As we passed the old manual lock, one of the Tour Boats was passing through and needed a little assistance, so Sarah's son Louis jumped in and helped them open and close the gates. We went to the northern part of the old town, and had a look at a couple of student apartments that Alban was in the process of buying, in memory of the years he spent in Besancon as a student. They are located in a part of the town close to the tram line that is very popular with students, and we admired the location as we sat at a riverside cafe having a cool drink.

In mid-afternoon, we set off to find the location where a Circle Singing workshop was being held that afternoon. Along the way, we noticed the Tour Boat that we helped through the lock going around the city on its loop trip through the tunnel and around the old town.

We got to the Circle Singing at 1600h, and they were already singing. But as we gathered around and they stop singing, people started to walk away, and we soon learned that the workshop ran from 1500-1600h, not 1600-1700h. Doh!

So we headed back to the boat a bit earlier than expected, and then Rita, Sarah and Alban headed up river and then swam back down to the boat. Soon thereafter, we saw the canoes returning home after a day of activity.

That evening, the disco-restaurant across the river was in full swing, with the music drifting across the river and inducing just a little bit of twerking on the rear deck of Kanumbra. Sadly, we were to learn later that this was the last function across the river for this year, as the town starts its long slow shutdown for winter.

After everyone else had headed off to bed, I checked on the results of the British Speedway Grand Prix in Cardiff and found that Australian Jack Holder had come second; not bad for a bloke who was returning from an injury suffered a few weeks ago in the Speedway World Cup Final.
