Fri 24 June - late rise, persistent rain, chat, academia.edu, six for drinks, dancing

After our late-night chatting yesterday, everyone was happy to rise late this morning. There was persistent rain outside, so after breakfast in the wheelhouse, Arnim and I just continued the chat from last night. It was great hearing about all the people I met at Cornell during my 5 years there in the 70's and 80's. Arnim also introduced me to a website called academia.edu, which has access to a vast array of publications from around the world, and also runs a citation service which allows you to check who is reading your own publications. With it, Arnim has been tracking who has been reading our book on Transport Survey Methods over the years, and has been surprised at the international spread of the citations. Since I no longer have access to any university libraries, I will consider taking out a subscription to the service (for about $50/year) to enable me to access publications in my current research interests in renewable energy and farm forestry.

In the early evening, after the rain had cleared for a while, we went into town for a walk. Given the variable weather, I got some interesting evening photos. Like many French cities, Besançon has an interesting chimney skyline, so it pays to walk around town with your head up.

We had invited Rob and Anna to join us for drinks in town at Place Sepembre 8 that evening. We had just sat down and ordered drinks at a little cafe beside Eglise Saint-Pierre, when the wind and showers picked up again, so we headed indoors. The six of us had a great time, discussing all sorts pf things, and Arnim and Heidi learned a bit more about the barging life, with our new Best Friends (who we had met for the first time two days ago!).

We must have had a good time in the cafe, because after we left, Arnim got this photo of the four Aussies doing some form of traditional dancing. But none of us has any recollection of what the hell we were actually doing!
