Fri 10 June - canal walk, Oh Deer, Cacor Cafe, booking, no TollTag, BelAir, pizza

We decided to wait until after the morning mail had been delivered to Rue Gambetta, to see whether the TollTag had arrived. In the meantime, we went for a canal walk. Along the way, we saw a young deer in the canal, swimming to and fro between the two banks, but unable to get out of the canal. A VNF van soon arrived and the driver asked us to move to the western side of the deer on the walkway, while he went across to the other side, and then we could "walk" the deer up the canal (since it would always go away from us). So we did this, and sure enough the deer started swimming away from us, until it reached a place on the other bank (which the VNF guy knew about) where it was shallow enough to clamber up the bank and scamper away into the forest.

We then continued our walk until we reached the Cacor Cafe, where we stopped for a drink. As Rita was ordering the drinks at the counter, the manager introduced himself and asked if he could join us at our table. He was a delightful fellow, with an interesting backstory about being tired of the corporate world and then seeing the Cacor Eclusiers house on his holidays, and deciding to buy it and create a cafe and music space behind it - which he did! So he was very interested when Rita told him about our steelband and our French tours in 2014 and 2018 and our performances in Moissac. Within half an hour, we had agreed that the Cafe would be a great place for our next Moissac performance. So we swapped business cards and promised to keep in touch.

When we got back to the Aire, we contacted Isabelle and found that the TollTag had not yet arrived. So since it was Friday, we decided not to wait around any longer, and just asked Isabelle to post it to Auxonne when it finally arrived. We then hit the road for Auxonne in the two vehicles, but decided not to attempt it in one day, as we did on the way down. So we consulted the CamperContact app and found a camper park about halfway in the Puy de Dome region near Clermont-Ferrand: the Bel Air Camper Park near St Ours. This site was very pleasant, with a cafe and pool, and a great view of the Puy de Dome, part of the range of volcanic mountains in the region.

After we settled in, we wandered over to the cafe and had a very relaxed dinner of pizza and beer. We then strolled back to the van through the empty campsites (there were only two other vans in the park) and settled in for a very quiet evening and a good night's sleep in the countryside.
