Fri 5 Aug - up early, multimodal, van, car, walk, train, boat, Volkers, shade, breezy

We were up early in Besain to make an 0845h start to what would become a very multimodal day! After a quick breakfast with Sarah (Albon was already at the farm milking the cows), we headed off in the van around 0830h, headed for the secure car park at St Jean de Losne. There we switched to the Scenic and I drove Rita to the Auxonne Gare, where she waited with the baggage, while I drove on to Port Royal at Auxonne, where I left the car. I then walked back to the station, admiring the flower displays on the bridge as I crossed the River Saone (many French communities, including Auxonne and Moissac, take great pride in their public flower displays).

We then caught the train to L'Isle sur le Doubs, and walked back to the boat. We grabbed some lunch and made preparations for departure, and were away by 1455h. However, because of the narrowness of the canal in the port at LSLD, we had to initially head north till we reached a turning circle, where we did a three point turn and came back through the port to actually leave LSLD at 1520h. After a quiet and relaxing trip on the Saone, we reached "Volker's Lock" at 1635h, just as the mooring pontoon was entering the shade from the hills to the west of the river. We settled in to our mooring at the ecluse waiting pontoon (but kept an eye out for any boats heading north that might want to use the pontoon - none came along) and tried once again to apply online for a replacement Carte de Grise (vehicle registration papers). This time we were successful, so all we need to do now is wait for it to arrive in the mail at Moissac (our vehicle registration address). It was now cooler and breezy, so we grabbed a late-afternoon nap, before getting up for dinner and to watch the clouds at sunset. We don't get a traditional sunset at this mooring, because of the hills to the west of us, but we often get some nice sunset clouds to the east, and today was no exception.
