Thursday 12 July - overcast, solar farm, Golfech, batteries, dog, generator

Once we reached our mooring at Golfech, we did a u-turn so that the rear deck was in the shade. We had aimed for here because we knew we could get shorepower, after our two nights of “wild mooring” at Damazan and Agen. Interestingly, as on other days, the batteries were still at 45% charge, as they were when we left Agen. The alternator on the main engine seems to be supplying enough charge for our usage during the day, but not enough to re-charge the batteries. We’ll need to investigate this further.

Rita cycled off in the late afternoon to pay our mooring fees at the Mairie, and then continued on to Valence d’Agen to go swimming at the piscine, while I worked on this blog. While I was working away, I heard a paddling noise and looked up to see a dog headed my way on the canal! Luckily I got my camera out quick enough to get this photo as he passed. Ah, Frenchmen and their dogs!

As an experiment, while we were connected to shorepower, I thought I’d try one last time to start the generator (even thought we wouldn’t need it before we got back to Moissac).  So I turned off the charger and inverter, and gave it a go. It started OK as usual, but then continued running. I turned the charger and inverter on, and it still continued running. It looked like the problem had disappeared, for the moment. But a few minutes later, it stopped with a water temperature failure! This was the same error we’d got in the past when the inlet water was blocked, and when the impeller had disintegrated. So we’ll need to check this again later, after the capacitators have been replaced to solve the original problem.

We spent a quiet night reading, and then turned in early.
