Monday 2 July - rain, IWHC, gym, capacitors, WC, F’n’C, Battle of the Pipers

Given the consistently hot weather we have been having in Moissac so far this year, we were surprised to be woken by the sound of rain on the cabin roof during the night. But it came to a sum total of about 12 drops of rain before stopping. Oh well!

I contacted Tam Murrell to see if he could provide a replacement copy of our Inland Waters Helmsmans Certificates which we got from him in 2011. However, he replied that he wouldn’t provide replacements, so we will have to find another way to get them.

During the day, Rita contacted the Mairie, and confirmed that we have the Uvarium Gym for rehearsals in the week leading up to the Festival. We just have to be careful about using amplification, since a councillor lives nearby.

Rita then went swimming in La Francaise; now that she is confident driving the Renault, I don’t have to drive her to various places, which frees up my time for other activities. So today I dived into the engine room and followed Paul Ladyman’s instructions for find the values of the capacitors that need replacing in the generator. After finding the wiring box, I located the capacitors and read the values off the sides; 20 and 25uF (microfarads). I sent this info to Paul to order the replacement external capacitor box.

Later in the afternoon, Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 in the World Cup, thus spoiling the party for the new President of Mexico who had been elected that day. In the evening, Belgium beat Japan 3-2.

Given it was the first Monday of the month, it was Fish’n’Chips Night at the Sunbeam Cafe. Bernard Barbier came along with Erwin from "La Menta”, the Library Boat, that was still in port. Fish’n’Chips Night has also become a Karaoke Night with Tony Kelly, and many people got up to try their hand. I must say that the quality of singers has improved dramatically this year; perhaps everyone is preparing for Karaoke Night at the Barging Festival. Many of the singers were from Piper Barges; Rita and I kicked it off with a rather lame attempt, then Roy and Verne from Karanja and Greg and Bridget from Drumsara got into the swing of things. Their quality was much better than ours, as can be seen from this little video clip.
