Thursday 31 July - Weldom materials, new toilet, tobacco barn, SWC Race-off

In the morning, we got a call from Weldom to say that the pan stand materials we had ordered last week had arrived. So we bundled ourselves into the Scenic and headed out there. As with the linen shopping yesterday, the quantities were a bit overwhelming - 72 metres of PVC polypipe, 108 t-pieces, 72 elbows and 36 metres of rectangular dowel - and a pot of PVC glue.

After folding all the seats down on one side of the car, we were able to get everything into the Scenic (after racing back into the store as they closed for lunch to get a few bungey cords to hold everything in place).

While we were at Weldom, we checked out the macerator toilet on display and concluded that it would be a good replacement - the one on display (at left below) looked very similar to the Vetus model (at right below).

After that, on the way home, we stopped at the Renault garage car hire place to make sure the nine-seater van was booked and available for use in August.

Once we got home, I got stuck into making more pan stands, while Rita went to do more gardening at the house.

In the late afternoon, we went to do an inspection of a potential rehearsal site in St Nicholas de la Grave. Thierry Giraud, our plumber, had lined us up with a lady for whom he had previously done some plumbing work, and who had a large shed (an old tobacco drying barn) in her backyard. The building looked fabulous, and would seem to be very suitable, so we added it to the list of potential rehearsal spaces. Mme Michel took some flyers from us and said she would distribute them to her neighbours to ensure there were no complaints about the three days of rehearsal.

During the evening, I followed the Speedway World Cup Race-off meeting, to see who would progress to the Final on the weekend. After a tight battle with Sweden during the first half of the meeting, Australia pulled away in the second half to win comfortably and progress to the Final to race against Poland, Denmark and Great Britain.
